Little history is known about one General Purpose Willy by Ford, serial number GPW241385, but what is clear is that the vehicle emanates American ingenuity and stubborn longevity. Manufactured in December 1944, the General Purpose Willy may have seen duty on an Air Force Base. Hints of light (Air Force) gray spray paint over the olive drab were apparent before repainting. The unpublished hood numbers have not been researched. It may have received its first “standard modification” during active duty. What appears to be a .45 caliber bullet hole was strategically fired through the passenger floor to provide water drainage, an issue that was later corrected in the Civilian Jeep 2A with a side drain slot in the body. At an unknown date GPW 241385 was relocated to a large ranch as an “Army Surplus Jeep”. There it traversed double track trails in the mountains of Colorado, hauling what the horses could not. Standard modification for this work would require advancing the ignition timing by 1 degree for every 1000 feet of altitude. The GPW sustained damage to the spare tire bracket and rear body when ranch hands tried to vault over a huge irrigation ditch. The wheel house surfaces were used for work benches leaving dents and dings. It received the standard “farmer fix” to the drain holes on the frame rails, welded chunks of band iron. At some point the odometer seized at 60,000 miles. But one must remember, “There is no such thing as a junk Jeep”. For the next 30 years the GPW was owned between two brothers and their father. It appears that the vehicle was partially rebuilt by competent mechanics using high grade military spec. parts. Modernizations at this time included turn signals (street legal) and hinged doors of some kind. A fuel pressure device was added to the fuel line to reduce vapor lock caused by high altitude bubbling of the gasoline. The black out driving light mounting holes were brazed shut. An external horn button was installed on the steering column. Military non-directional tread tires were replaced with civilian mud and snow tires. As parts became harder to find, make-shifting occurred. Sometime during these 30 years it was fitted with a domed metal hard top cut from a Desoto Coupe. The Desoto also donated an over-size carburetor that made the jeep lug from too much gas during acceleration. A bench seat was installed. A CJ-2A gas tank was installed requiring a chiseled hole through the side of the body for the fill spout. A power steering pump was mounted, which ran off the crank pulley, lifting a plow blade attached to the front bumper. The GPW was utilized as a snow plow, steadfastly serving in the American way. In 1996 this wrinkled Great Grand Father, long since out of uniform, was purchased by a professional artist who had already brought a 1949 CJ-2A back to life. The new title continued to read “44 FORD UT”. It was running and could be driven home to the neighboring town. Over the next 14 years the artist methodically removed part after part, carefully servicing the vehicle without wiping clean the history logged by numerous dents and dings. Reproduction parts were kept to a minimum. Script “F” parts were saved. Weld bead was added and then ground flush. The master cylinder was sleeved with stainless steel. The exhaust manifold was blue printed and ground to fit. A total of $5400 in parts and untold hours of labor were poured into the Ancient Warrior. Today this 66 year old vehicle documents American no-how and perseverance by its very existence, and lives on as a tried-and-true example of The World War Two Jeep. Asking $9,000, OBO, REDUCED.
